Free Psychologist Matching Call

Choosing a psychologist can feel difficult, especially if you are not sure what type of therapy you need or which psychologist may be the right fit.

South Yarra Psychology offers free psychologist matching calls with our principal psychologist, Dr Joanne Dennison. The call is designed to help you consider which psychologist at the practice may be well suited to your needs, preferences and availability before booking an appointment.

Our team includes registered psychologists, clinical psychologists and counselling psychologists with different areas of experience, therapeutic approaches and appointment availability. The matching call can help you narrow down your options and feel more confident about who to book with.

How the psychologist matching call works

The matching call is a brief telephone appointment of approximately 10 minutes.

During the call, the psychologist will ask what you are seeking support for, what you would like help with, and whether there are any preferences that may be relevant. This might include whether you are seeking in-person or telehealth appointments, and whether you have a preference for a particular therapy approach.

If you have seen a psychologist before, we may also ask what you did or did not find helpful in previous therapy. This can help us recommend psychologist options who may be better aligned with your current needs.

The matching call is not a crisis support session, therapy session or clinical assessment. It is a brief call to help guide your choice of psychologist at South Yarra Psychology.

What we consider when recommending a psychologist

When recommending psychologist options, we may consider:

  • what you are seeking support for

  • your therapy goals

  • whether you are looking for short-term strategies, deeper insight, trauma-focused therapy, relationship-focused work, or ongoing support

  • each psychologist’s areas of experience

  • each psychologist’s therapeutic approaches

  • current appointment availability

  • whether you prefer in-person appointments in South Yarra or telehealth

Our aim is to help you book with a psychologist who may be a good fit for your needs.

Common reasons people request a matching call

New clients often request a matching call when they are seeking support for concerns such as anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, relationship difficulties, self-esteem, burnout, grief, life transitions, emotional regulation difficulties, or recurring patterns that are affecting their wellbeing.

You do not need to know exactly what type of therapy you need before booking. Many clients simply know that something feels difficult, stuck or overwhelming, and would like help deciding where to start.

Can a new client book without a matching call?

Yes. The matching call is optional.

New clients are welcome to book directly through our online booking system without booking a matching call. If you choose to book directly, please check the availability of the psychologist you wish to see, as not all psychologists have availability for new clients.

You may also wish to read our psychologist profiles before booking. Each profile provides information about the psychologist’s areas of experience, therapeutic approaches and the clients they work with.

In-person & telehealth appointments

South Yarra Psychology offers both in-person and telehealth appointments.

Most clients attend in person at our South Yarra rooms. Telehealth appointments may also be available, depending on the psychologist and the type of support you are seeking.

The matching call can help clarify which psychologists currently have appointment availability that may suit your needs.

Do I need a GP referral?

You do not need a GP referral to book an appointment with a psychologist at South Yarra Psychology.

A GP referral and Mental Health Treatment Plan are only required if you would like to claim Medicare rebates for eligible psychology sessions. If you are not planning to claim Medicare rebates, you can book directly without a referral.
